And so...my first review.

First Love
by: Adrienne Sharp

I have to be honest, when I first checked this book out of the library, I had...how do I put this delicately...serious doubts. It looked like a syrupy puff piece, and after reading the fly-leaf, I wasn't any more convinced it wasn't, but still I plowed on. Ms. Sharp however, proved me wrong. Sandra and Adam, the main characters are believeable and after awhile you actually start to care what happens to them. Sharp has done a great job of pairing fictional characters with actual people, as both Adam and Sandra are creations whereas George Balanchine and Mikhail Baryshnikov are obviously real people, the first being a ballet master, creating scores of dances throughout the past few decades and the latter being a well-know ballet dancer. I was impressed, particularly, with the characterization and with Sharp's ability to so clearly paint a picture of the dance world, from the beautiful aspects like the costumes and music; to the ugly, like the competition, weight control practices, and all too short life of a dancer. It was haunting and at some point disturbing. I enjoyed the weaving in of the aspect of AIDS in the 80s, but, at time, it felt misplaced and almost like an afterthought, but it did do a nice job of fleshing out some of the smaller characters that you want to know more about, especially that of Adam's uncle. This book does not have a happy, cookie-cutter ending, something I appreciated, but also found very frustrating. Sharp left the ending ambigious enough that the reader could draw their own conclusions as to what happened with the two main characters, but after all is said and done, I found that one of the books weaker points, not one of it's best.

Out of 5 stars, I give it 3.5.
